The BREEAM certification scheme has been developed in the UK in 1990 by the BRE (Building Research Establishment Ltd.), one of the world's leading research establishments for the construction industry, delivering sustainability and innovation across the built environment. BREEAM is essentially a sustainability and environmental evaluation method for buildings, that ranks international projects on a 5-Star scale similar to the well-known 5-star hotel rating. BREEAM also enables developers, owners, or users to gain recognition for their building’s environmental performance.

Nine sustainable construction groups are evaluated under BREEAM: Water, Ecology & Land use, Energy, Health & Well-being, Management, Materials, Waste, Transport, and Pollution. Within each category, a set of criteria are rigorously defined by the BRE depending on the building type, location, and usage. The final BREEAM rating is determined based on the extent of integration and execution of the BREEAM requirements in each project.
